Differential and drivetrain repair
A howl that rises with speed, a clunk when you take up the throttle, gear oil on the inside of a wheel: those are differential and driveline problems, and they sit in the same family of work as a transmission. We diagnose and repair differentials, axles and driveline components at our Cutler Bay shop.

Differential and driveline symptoms
- A howl or whine that changes with road speed and load
- A clunk when shifting from Reverse to Drive or when accelerating from a stop
- Vibration at speed that is not tires or wheels
- Gear oil leaking at the pinion seal or axle seals
- Grinding or roughness on turns

How we handle it
- 01
Isolate the noise
Road test under load, coast and turns to separate differential noise from wheel bearings, tires and the transmission.

Inspect
Fluid condition, backlash, bearing preload, ring and pinion wear pattern.

Repair
Bearings, seals, axles, or a ring-and-pinion set, set up to spec on the bench.

Fill and road test
The correct gear oil, limited-slip additive where required, and a drive to confirm the noise is gone.

Good to know
- Differential setup is measured in thousandths; a set installed without measuring backlash and pattern will howl again.
- Rear-, front- and all-wheel-drive vehicles are all welcome.
FAQ
Questions we get asked
What does a bad differential sound like?
Usually a howl or whine that rises and falls with road speed, changes when you accelerate versus coast, and may add a clunk on throttle changes. A wheel bearing tends to change with steering instead.
Is a differential leak serious?
Low gear oil destroys bearings and gears quickly. A leak at a seal is a small repair; running it dry turns it into a large one.
